Europe Distillates-Diesel gains on demand rise, Rhine problems

05-Aug-2015 17:09:00

LONDON, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Diesel barge differentials in northwest Europe strengthened slightly on Wednesday as the recent decline in oil prices attracted buyers and due to transport delays along the Rhine.

The recent drop in crude and gasoil prices has once again led to an increased buying interest from end users for diesel and heating oil, which will go into storage, traders said.

"The flat price is supporting again though August still seems over supplied," a trader said.

Limited barge loading due to low Rhine river water levels WL-KAUB and reports of production problems at two German refineries created further supply concerns inland, traders said.

"Predicted rainfall in southern Germany during the weekend might give some relief to decreasing water levels, however we do not expect any major impact on the market as demand for barges is still strong," Riverlake Barging, a tanker barge broker, said in a report.

A standard 2,500-tonne barge was loading up to 1,100 tonnes due to the low water levels, they said.

Imports from the U.S. Gulf Coast are expected to reach 1 million tonnes in August, lower than initially expected.

However, together with around 800,000 tonnes expected to be imported from Asia and the Middle East and an additional 2 million tonnes from Russia, supply is expected to outstrip demand by around 500,000 tonnes in August, traders say.

In the Mediterranean, Total TOTF.PA has restarted its 153,000 barrel per day La Mede refinery in the south of France, the company said on Wednesday. (Full Story)

Turkey's Tupras and Petrol Ofisi each tendered to buy one cargo of diesel for delivery in August, traders said.

  • Barges of 0.1 percent gasoil traded at discounts of $14.25-$14.75 a tonne fob ARA to August Low Sulphur Gasoil futures LGOc1, in line with Tuesday's trades.
  • No cargoes traded. Vitol offered two cargoes in the Mediterranean.
  • One barge of 50 ppm gasoil traded at a discount of $4.50 a tonne fob ARA below August diesel futures.
  • At 1547 GMT August ICE Low Sulphur Gasoil futures were $5.25 lower at $468 a tonne.
  • The ICE gasoil crack LGO-LCO1=R was at $13.51 a barrel, down from $13.86 a barrel.
  • The contango between the August and September contracts was unchanged at $2.75 a tonne.

  • Diesel barges traded at discounts of $1-$1.25 a tonne fob ARA versus August diesel futures, compared with minus $1.25-$2 a tonne on Tuesday.
  • There were no cargo trades. BP and Litasco offered three cargoes while Gunvor bid for one.

  • Shell sold to Trafigura a cargo at a $15 premium fob Rotterdam to August ICE futures.
  • No cargoes traded as there were no bids or offers.

  • Barges of high-sulphur fuel oil with 3.5 percent sulphur content traded at $248-$249.50 a tonne fob ARA, compared with $248.50-$250.50 a tonne on Tuesday.

Riverlake recruits Cook - Tradewinds online article -

Riverlake Group has recruited veteran broker Graham Cook to its fledgling dry cargo operation.

He joined the London office of the Geneva shipbroker from Icap on Wednesday, Riverlake has confirmed.

Cook has been in dry-cargo broking as both a principal and a competitive broker. He joined the Baltic Exchange back in 1981.

“We are pleased to announce that Graham Cook has joined our London dry broking team,” said managing director Jeremy Swales.

Cook’s main market segment is in the handy-ultramax market and has always worked in the London market.

Riverlake Group diversifyied into the dry sector late last year establishing the London office in October with Jeremy Swales recruited to run it.

He previously headed the London-based dry cargo desk of Braemar Seascope where he was closely involved in supramax, project and transhipment business.

The move marked a new era for Riverlake, which is better known for its involvement in the wet side of the shipbroking business.

Riverlake chief executive Marc Lecoanet said at the time that his company had handled some dry business but had been “waiting for the right opportunity” to expand into the sector.

“London fills a gap on the dry side and geographically [it is] a good place to be,” he told TradeWinds.

The new office is seeking to utilise Riverlake’s specialist knowledge of West Africa in an effort to develop its mini-capesize and long-term iron ore business.

Last summer Riverlake took over the business of Auriga International Maritime, a company specialising in cargoes of palm oil, ethanol, base oil and chemicals and run by William De’Ath.
