Market Update | Early Signs of Easing in European Inland Shipping

The inland waterway market remains firm, with supply continuing to lag behind demand across the ARA region, affecting schedules and barge availability.

That said, we are seeing the first tentative signs of a shift: activity is slowing slightly and some additional tonnage is coming to market. The overall balance remains tight, and securing prompt capacity still requires close attention, but the direction is worth watching.

Low water on the Rhine remains the key wildcard. Intake restrictions around Kaub continue to limit transport capacity, and the dry, warm weather forecast adds further uncertainty. Should upstream navigation become increasingly difficult, some Rhine-focused tonnage could return toward ARA — which would provide further relief.
